The family just got back from a 10 day long trip to California. It was pretty intense and we were moving almost every waking hour. San Diego Zoo Photos

A Saturday afternoon at the San Diego Zoo. We didn’t get off to a good start by seeing the reptiles first, but the monkeys, tiger, polar bears, pandas, elephants and giraffes more than made up for it. Overall, it is a good zoo, with a wide variety of animals in what look to be comfortable surroundings. I would say that the viewing locations could be better…

Thousand Oaks Panorama

Taken from the end of a residential street in the suburban city of Thousand Oaks. The houses perched on these hills have a precarious relationship with nature due to the ever present forest fire threat. Los Angeles Photos

We didn’t have much time in Los Angeles, so we did a whirlwind daytrip starting at the Reagan Library. They have an old Air Force One 707 on display and it was cool to see. Then we drove down to the Getty Center for lunch. It was pretty extravagant, aparently costing over a billion dollars to construct. After getting the car again, we drove through the campus of UCLA and caught Wilshire Blvd into downtown. There we saw the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles’ new modern catholic church. Getty Center Panoramas

A quick stop by the Getty Center in Los Angeles to check out the architecture and views. We walked around for a bit and had lunch at the restaurant before checking out the visiting gallery and heading on. Pacific Coast Highway Photos

Starting in Monterey, we went down through Pebble Beach and Carmel-By-the-Sea before joining up with the Pacific Coast Highway and heading down to San Luis Obispo. Along the way we stopped at the Nepenthe Restaurant and numerous overlooks between there and the Hearst Castle. The next day we got up and took off down the coast for La Purisima Mission. It is a quaint, spanish-style mission that was rebuilt many years ago. The last stop was the dutch town of Solvang before we drove the rest of the way to Los Angeles. Pacific Coast Highway Panoramas

After Pebble Beach, we started down California 1 toward Big Sur. It was still foggy so the drive wasn’t that interesting. We stopped by the Nepenthe Restaurant for lunch. The view was excellent and the fog cleared up a good bit while we ate. After lunch we continued down the Pacific Coast Highway towards the Hearst Castle – we didn’t have the opportunity to tour it since there weren’t any more tickets when we got there.

Monterey Panoramas

We began our Pacific Coast Highway tour in Monterey. After driving down Lighthouse Rd next to the bay, we turned south and drove through Pebble Beach on the 17 Mile Road. It was foggy and cold, but very scenic.
