Stairs in the Trees

New Years in New Jersey

Because it had been a while since our great Northeast Train Trip, Janis and I decided it would be fun to travel up to the New York City area for New Years. We embarked on the morning of the 30th, driving all day to get there, fortunately only hitting moderate traffic around DC. The next day, we set off and did some sight seeing in the town of Red Bank, hiking through the marshes of Sandy Hook, bowling in the largest bowling alley Janis and I have ever seen and watched fireworks in the city of New Brunswick. On Sunday, we closed out our trip in the city, walking through a snowy Central Park and seeing the tree at Rockefeller Center. [view-the-gallery galleryaddress=”NJForNYE”]

Toy Soldiers

Taken on a recent trip to the Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens. During the holiday season, they set up a fairly impressive light display within the gardens. For a nominal fee, anyone can walk around and check it out.

Xmas Tree Retrieval

With Christmas just around the corner, we needed to get a tree. This year we decided to get a fresh one from the mountains. We drove up to Boone with a friend and found a nice tree farm off of NC 194. With 4 inches of snow on the ground and more falling, we had a nice time throwing snowballs at each other. For fun, we drove over to Banner Elk, where it was really snowing. After enjoying warm beverages, we drove back home.[view-the-gallery galleryaddress=”ScavengingForTrees”]

Fall Getaway

After Janis’ great month, we decided to take a day off and catch the last of the fall colors in the NC mountains. This time, we would check out the western end of the Blue Ridge Parkway – that is, the stretch from Cherokee to Asheville. After checking out the Maggie Valley area and a quick lunch in the shadows of the Cherokee Casino, we hopped on the Parkway. The colors weren’t so good at the higher elevations, but the views and weather were great!

Closer to Asheville, we stopped and hiked up to Black Balsam Knob. This grassy 6000’+ summit provides breathtaking panoramic views. We closed the day out with dinner in Asheville and some people watching with Halloween in full force.[view-the-gallery galleryaddress=”FallGetaway”]
