Northeast Amtrak Map

While taking our first trip on Amtrak from Charlotte to New York City recently, I had the handheld GPS on and recording our location along the way. I was curious about two things: first, where are the tracks amtrak uses, and secondly, how fast do the trains go. After returning home, I was able to download the tracks and using gpsvisualizer.com put together a series of google maps color coded by speed. Click on ‘Continue Reading’ to view the maps.

Flushing Meadows Panorama

Although the weather sucked, Craig and I decided to make the trip out to Flushing Meadows. It was cool to see some of the old Worlds Fair stuff, although I think one could get tetanus from just looking at some of it. We knew the Unisphere from the movie Men in Black and it was interesting to see it in person.

Brooklyn Panoramas

We managed to see a great bit of Brooklyn – heading out to the Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island and the base of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. It’s amazing to see how large and diverse Brooklyn is in comparison to Manhattan.

Times Square Panoramas

Tourists like Times Square and fortunately for me, I was a tourist during this trip. Taken from roughly the same spot, these VR panoramas illustrate the dramatic difference between day and night.

Northeast Trip 2009

We recently returned from a multi-week train trip up to the northeast, visiting friends and sightseeing. It opened up in Washington DC for 4 days, then Baltimore for 4 days, the Jersey Shore for 3 days and then ended with 7 days in New York City. On the Jersey Shore, more specifically Asbury Park, we participated in a “zombie walk” flash-mob. Portions of the walk were recorded for the show Cake Boss and will air on TLC sometime in July. Above seeing all of the cool things in each of those cities, we had a good time doing normal day to day stuff with our friends as well.
